The OMA has released the second instalment in a four-part e-learning series to help members navigate the complexities of hospital-based practice. “Unit 2: Hospital Governance” is now available on the OMA Education Network.
Learning objectives
The unit reviews the key players within the hospital governance structure (like the hospital Board, Medical Advisory Committee, Medical Staff Association, and more), and provides practical guidance to help members navigate the hospital administration when faced with a common conflict or concern.
After completing Unit 2, participants will be able to:
- outline the governance structure of an Ontario hospital and define the key roles within it
- identify the appropriate person to go to with a common question, concern or conflict
As with all learning modules available on the OMA Education Network, Unit 2 is interactive, can be completed on a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile phone, and is available free to members.
Accreditation
Developed under the leadership of the OMA Hospital Issues Committee, this Self-Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+® credit. This activity is also an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Professional Development. You may claim a maximum of 1.0 hour (credits are automatically calculated).
Additional units to come
The additional two units, soon to be released, will focus on the following areas:
- Unit 3: Privileges – will take an in-depth look at hospital privileges, including how to get them and how to keep them, and how to effectively manage privileges-related disagreements.
- Unit 4: Contracts and Agreements – will explore the many possible types of physician engagement with the hospital and peer groups including independent contractor relationships, employment, governance agreements, and practice plans.
Members will be notified as each unit is released.
