OMA releases first module in hospital-based practice learning series on rules and regulations

The OMA has released the first instalment in a four-part e-learning series to help members navigate the complexities of hospital-based practice. “Unit 1: Rules and Regulations for Hospital-Based Physicians” is now available on the OMA Education Network.

Learning Objectives

The unit explores rules relevant to hospital-based practice, including provincial legislation, hospital by-laws, and professional staff rules, regulations, and policies.

After completing Unit 1, participants will be able to:

  • identify the key pieces of provincial legislation that govern physicians working in Ontario hospitals
  • describe the difference between hospital by-laws and other hospital rules, regulations, and policies

As with all learning modules available on the OMA Education Network, Unit 1 is interactive, can be completed on a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile phone, and is available free to members.

Accreditation

Developed under the leadership of the OMA Hospital Issues Committee, this 1-credit-per-hour, self-learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 1 Mainpro+® credits. This activity is also an accredited self-assessment program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Professional Development. You may claim a maximum of 1.0 hour (credits are automatically calculated).

Additional Units to Come

The additional three units, to be released throughout the fall, will focus on the following areas:

  • Unit 2: Governance – will review the key players within the hospital governance structure (like the hospital board, medical advisory committee, medical staff association, and more), and will provide practical guidance to help members navigate the hospital administration when faced with a common conflict or concern
  • Unit 3: Privileges – will take an in-depth look at hospital privileges, including how to get them and how to keep them, and how to effectively manage privileges-related disagreements
  • Unit 4: Contracts and Agreements – will explore the many possible types of physician engagement with the hospital and peer groups including independent contractor relationships, employment, governance agreements, and practice plans

Members will be notified as each unit is released.
