Samuel Chiu, beloved brother, husband, father, and friend, passed in his sleep at the age of 79, on Dec. 26, 2024, in Burnaby, B.C. He is survived by his siblings (Henry, Patrick, Albert, Kwok Ying, Sau Ying, Sing Lok, Kit Ying, King Wah), his wife Dolores, and children Jason and Dorothy.
Samuel was born in Hong Kong, the second eldest in a family of ten siblings. After finishing high school at La Salle College, he moved to Canada to pursue his undergraduate degree at McGill University, followed by his master's and medical degrees at the University of Toronto. After practicing as a family physician in Toronto, he returned to Hong Kong to continue his medical career at Caritas Hospital, where he met and eventually married Dolores in 1982.
An adventurer at heart, Samuel valued physical well-being through diligence in exercise and nutrition, as well as expanded his intellectual horizons through regular travel. Equally important was his family, and he devoted his energy to providing the best environment in which to thrive. To support a well-rounded education for his children, Samuel immigrated to Canada with his family.
Samuel was a life-long academic who never grew tired of doing new things, from playing the organ, cooking new recipes, to practicing tai chi and mastering online chatting. Staying curious about the world was his way of life and he never took anything for granted. His words of wisdom and encouragement will keep inspiring us to be our very best. May he rest in peace.
