July 9, 1931 - Jan. 5, 2025
On the beautiful sunny morning of Jan. 5, 2025, at 93 years of age, Norman made his transition following several months of health challenges. Norman was the son of Lucy and Norman T. Ashurst (predeceased) and wonderful companion and travel partner of Sue Baxter.
Dr. Ashurst grew up near Manchester, England, studied at Downing College of Cambridge University and Guy's Hospital medical school. Before coming to Canada in 1970, he engaged in general practice for two years and then studied anesthesiology at Birmingham Hospital. A lifelong learner, Norman studied internal medicine at Cornell and finished his anesthesiology designation at the University of Western Ontario. Norman's main practice venue for many years was Grace Hospital, in the anesthesia department.
On coming to Canada, his first appointment was general practice in Listowel, Ont., and he was mentored by Dr. Arnold Goldberg, a countryman from England and life-long friend.
Norman was an intrepid traveller loving to explore places off the beaten track. For the past thirty years, he, along with Sue visited Central America and places in the Caribbean. But Norman's real love was travelling to British Columbia near Invermere and places on Vancouver Island, especially Sooke. Norman's only regret was that he didn't visit the Galapagos islands when he was younger.
Dr. Ashurst was a supporter of the arts. He loved classical music, opera and jazz as well as visiting art galleries in whatever town he visited. He was actually a decent artist himself, a talent he kept to himself!
Thank you to all of Norman's doctors and personal care providers, both in the home and during his short time with hospice. At Norman's request, there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place.
lf you so wish, a gift in memory of Norman may be made to the hospice of Windsor or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements were entrusted to Simple Choice (Dougall) and online condolences may be shared on their website.
