Dr. David Lloyd Shaul

It is with admiration for a long life well-lived that we announce the death of Dr. David Lloyd Shaul, FRCS(c), FACOG, FSOGC, on September 9, 2024, days short of his 100th birthday.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he was the eldest child of the late Nathan and Anna (nee Winkler) Shaul; and brother and brother-in-law of Harvey and Simma Shaul, Norman (z'l) and Lil Shaul, and the late Macey and Rosalie Cadesky. He was the husband of the late Shirley (nee Rapp) Shaul, and the late Ruth (nee Weisdorf) Foster and, as a widower, he cherished his close friendship with the late Fern Cohen.

He leaves to mourn his Shaul family, children: Sandra and Christopher, Edward and Eiko, and Lionel and Kathy; his Foster family stepchildren: Stephen and Helen, Jude and Paul, Danny, and Evan and Sue; the Harris/Cohen family children: John and Deb, Robin and Robin, Wendy and Neil, and Michael and Minda; his grandchildren, Charles, Sara Brynn and Peter, Roberta and Ashley Foster; sisters-in-law, Fern Horwitz and Constance Rapp; and his niece and nephews and their families.

David was a well loved, passionately dedicated and highly respected obstetrician and gynaecologist, following in the footsteps of his father. Their practices at Mount Sinai Hospital spanned about 70 years. He was an innovator in medical practice. Among his achievements, he became the first director of a course on human sexuality in the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, and in 1980, he received the faculty's W.T. Atkins award for excellence in teaching. He retired as Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Psychiatry, a certified sex counsellor and sex educator.

David's lifetime hobby was photography. He was also a skilled sailor, although a hacker at golf. He was the ultimate people person, as a delightfully entertaining comic and for his empathetic nature and dedication to service. For a decade, he was the highest individual fundraiser in the Walk for Alzheimer's, raising more than $280,000.

David was cared for by the stellar team at The Dunfield Retirement Residence and VHA Home Healthcare's incomparable team of Veronica, Jean, Yolande and Zeny. After suffering a debilitating stroke, he was able to spend his last days at home thanks to outstanding support from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, and his devoted helpers, Ella and Maryam.

David was kind and loved us all and we loved him. He will be sorely missed forever.

Memorial donations in David Shaul's memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Toronto (416-640-6308) or to the Shirley Shaul Endowment Fund and the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care through the Sinai Health Foundation (416-586-8203).
