In memoriam
Dec. 30, 2024

Dr. Paul Douglas White

Paul Douglas White, MD (FRCS) 1934-2024

Paul was born in London, Ont., the oldest child of Hazel White (Carnegie) and Arthur H. White.

He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl White (Snyder), sister Catherine Waugh and brother-in-law Bill Mulveney. Predeceased by his sister Bobbie Mulveney and brother-in-law Balfour Waugh. Loving father of Tony White (Lisa), Andrea White (Jason), Casi Zehr (Greg) and Robert Mansell (Caroline). Devoted grandfather to Calvin Zehr and Mitchell Zehr.

Paul's early years in Hamilton included summer freedom on Lake Erie's shores and study at Westdale Collegiate (1953). He returned to London and Western University to earn his MD in 1959. Years at Montreal General, St. Joseph's (London) and Detroit Receiving Hospital led to certification in ophthalmology and ocular surgery in 1964.

Paul had a zest for life and enjoyed a long, successful career as an ophthalmologist in Kitchener-Waterloo from 1964-2004. He was a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Racquet Club, Northfield Racquet Club and Westmount Golf and Country Club, enjoying squash, tennis and other events in the presence of many friends his entire life.

We are immensely grateful for the privilege of sharing so many years with him, especially the gift of celebrating his 90th birthday last February in Ixtapa, Mexico, where he walked the beach, enjoyed daily swims in the pool, and played cribbage games he rarely lost.

With Cheryl, he had a long and loving marriage, surrounded by family and friends. Cycling, duplicate bridge and travel were shared activities that led to rewarding travels. Sanibel, Europe and South Devon, U.K., are special memories.

The road ahead will be different without Dad (Paul), but we will carry with us the memories of his booming laughter, dry wit and colourful sense of humour. He will be missed and will forever remain in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region or Grand River Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. (Cards are available at the funeral home.)
