It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dr. Merril Jay Smullen on Sept. 11, 2024, at the age of 71.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Norine; children Malcolm, Kim, Daniel and spouse Lizzie, and Emma and spouse Matt; grandchildren Elise, Joel and Hannah; his sister Sharon and spouse Henry; nephew Isaak and partner Carolina, niece Rebecca; sister-in-law Joanne; nieces Sarah, Nadia & spouse Frank; nephew Stephen and spouse Sydnee; and lifelong friends Peter, Belinda, Mike and Brenda.
As a family physician in Bolton, Ont., for nearly four decades, Dr. Smullen cared for and touched the lives of hundreds of people in the community, spanning generations. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, to parents Abraham and Rita, Merril immigrated to Manitoba in 1980, then, in 1982, to Ontario, where he met and married Norine.
He cherished family life, loved playing golf, told countless jokes, and enjoyed the Florida sunshine with friends and family. Merril was dearly loved by his family, friends, and patients alike. Though he passed suddenly during a period of respite from serious illness, he is now resting in peace next to the sunny glades of the golf course where he played for 20 years.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. If you are able, please consider donating blood.
