Doc enjoyed music, dancing, billiards, swimming, tennis, sailing, travelling, scuba diving and flying. His love for family and music brought him endless enjoyment. Born in Trinidad and having grown up listening to calypso music, his instruments of choice were the maracas and harmonica. He took great pride in performing at every opportunity at parties, medical conventions, on cruises, and most recently at Collegiate Heights where he performed a couple of times a week. Many of his family members were honoured to have him perform his favourite songs just hours before he passed.
Doc moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., with his growing family to set up his urology practice in 1967. Founding the renal dialysis unit and urology clinic, and co-founding the angiography and the urodynamic clinic were among his accomplishments.
He served on many committees and held several positions of added responsibility such as president of medical staff, chief of surgery, deputy chief of staff, and chief of staff.
Doc was instrumental in introducing many new medical and surgical procedures to Sault Ste. Marie. For example, he introduced the angioaccess procedure for people requiring dialysis. He also organized and performed organ retrievals in Sault Ste. Marie for kidney transplants done in Toronto.
He received many accolades including the Medal of Merit and the Dr. William Hutchinson Award for his contributions to the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie. Doc was a teacher at heart and enjoyed instructing and giving lectures to many doctors, nurses and students. He was well-respected and loved by his colleagues and the entire community. In retirement, his interest in the well-being of others continued. Doc was an honourable man and will be greatly missed by all.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to the staff of Collegiate Heights, and the doctors, nurses and staff involved in his care at the Sault Area Hospital. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for Drs. Adrianna Schamp and Heather O’Brien. Their sincere compassion and wonderful care were a blessing.
Memorial donations to the Kidney Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre at 942 Great Northern Rd. in Sault Ste. Marie (phone number 705-945-7758).
