It is with great sadness that the family of John Edward Schuman announces his passing on Dec. 22, 2024.
John will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Martha; his stepsons, Sean (Barb) and Christopher (Cheryl) and sons, John Philip and Michael Schuman. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Phillip and Rose (Vennie) Schuman.
John was an exemplary student at St. Michael's College School and later St. Michael's College, University of Toronto, and medicine at the University of Toronto.
He specialized in internal medicine and sub-specialty of geriatrics. John had a long and illustrious career culminating at Providence Centre and St. Michael's Hospital.
He was the first medical director who was also a geriatrician, and also the vice-president of medical services at Providence. John was instrumental in instituting the palliative care program at Providence. He was also named associate professor at University of Toronto.
John's many professional achievements did not preclude his being beloved by colleagues, staff, students and patients. His gentle, caring and courteous ways hid a shy nature. His sense of humour delighted friends as it was so unexpected.
After retirement, John and his wife travelled in their RV, east, west and south, finding beauty in nature. John embarked on expanding his expertise in photography to reach the masters level and was sought to judge other photo clubs' exhibits. His love of photographing birds took them to many areas of North America. John loved to take part in his bible study group at St. Andrew Church in Oakville.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the palliative care program at Providence Healthcare. Condolences can be left on John's memorial page at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home website.
