Alex graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1964 then started residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto. Together with his partner, Jim Miller, he opened a medical practice in Alex’s basement and grew that practice into the successful Apple Hills Medical. He served his community as a family doctor for over 41 years.
During that time he also earned the title of president of medical staff, then chief of staff at the Mississauga Hospital, earning the reputation of being an efficient and strong leader who always put the needs of the patients first. It was a busy time for him as he did double duty as a physician and chief of staff for 10 years. After that, he became the chairman of the Trillium Hospital Foundation. He was never one to shy away from a challenge. Hard work was in his DNA!
Another valued piece of his medical career was the research he led on quality of care, which allowed him to travel the world as he was asked to share his findings across Canada, the United States, China, Russia and Israel, again showing that medicine and doing things right by the patients was his passion.
Of all his accomplishments on paper, Alex was most proud of his family. Helen and Alex were married for over 60 years. They loved to travel, visiting over 100 countries together. They have three children and eight grandchildren, of whom they are very proud.
