Dr. William Howard G. Strang

With the love of his family surrounding him, on Jan. 30, 2024, William Howard Guthrie Strang, MD, died peacefully at his home in Toronto. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Kearns) Strang; four sons, Mark (Mary Louise), Paul, John (Wendy Kennah) and Drew (Rebecca); seven grandchildren, Victoria (Simon McKeown), William, Graham, Samantha, Benjamin, Alexandra and Maxwell; and one great-grandson, Sullivan McKeown, all of whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Eleanor Ward. He leaves Aiello and Ward, nephews and nieces, and many close friends. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Bruce Ward; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Halter.

For 64 years, Bill and Pat shared a wonderful life together, filled with family, friends, fun, skiing, travelling and helping others through the practice of medicine. Bill followed the footsteps of his late father, Dr. A.G. Strang, into medicine, where he found his passion in life. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario in 1963, Bill completed his internship and post-graduate training at the Toronto Western Hospital. He completed his certification and received his fellowship in family medicine. For over 30 years, Bill practised family medicine and geriatrics in Niagara Falls, Ont., often as chief of the family practice unit of the Greater Niagara General Hospital.

In the 1970s, Bill and a dedicated group of doctors in Niagara Falls started a mentoring program for McMaster University medical students. The students interacted with patients in the doctors' offices to learn hands-on patient care. The program continues on to this day. In 1997, Bill continued his medical career in Chattanooga, Tennessee, practising family medicine and geriatrics until his retirement. He and Pat returned to Toronto in 2020.

If you wish to make a donation in Dr. Strang's memory, the family would appreciate your consideration of The CNIB Guide Dog Program.
