Dr. Andrew Tate Hunter died peacefully at the McCormick Home in his 98th year.
Beloved father of Cathy, Lorna (Macaulay), Angus and his wife, Sue; grandfather of Margeaux, Hunter, Sarah, Rachel, Luke and Claire; great-grandfather of Cassius, Rowan and Lily. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joan McDonald (1996) and his son, Andrew "Sandy", (1975) and second wife, Cynthia (2017).
Andy graduated from the Royal Canadian Naval College at Royal Roads, B.C. in 1946 and the UWO Faculty of Medicine in 1953. He began his career in Family Medicine in Milton before returning to London where he practised until 1999.
His passion for Family Medicine led him to become President of the College of Family Physicians (Ontario Chapter) and Director of one of the two pilot projects in Canada for the graduate training of Family Physicians. This training program changed the whole fabric of Family Practice in Canada. At the same, Andy became the Assistant Dean of Continuing Education at UWO and President of the Association of Medical Television Broadcasters.
He was formally recognized in 1985 when he delivered the W. Victor Johnston Oration at the Canadian College of Family Physicians. This honour is bestowed on a physician who has made a major contribution to Family Medicine.
A lifelong learner, lover of nature, literature and classical music, a skilled canoe builder and world traveler, Dad instilled a sense of adventure and fondness for skiing, golf and running. These endeavours led to many family (mis)adventures and fond memories.
The family is most grateful for the dedication, kindness, compassion and excellent care Dad received from the wonderful staff and volunteers at McCormick Home.
Memorial donations to the McCormick Home or St. Joseph's Health Care would be gratefully appreciated.
