Dr. Violet Doris Small, age 86, passed away on March 13, 2024, at University Hospital in London, Ont. She was born in Sudbury, Ont., to David and Katherine Doubrovine.
Dr. Small graduated from Queen’s medical school in 1961, after spending summers in Sudbury working at Silverman’s Department Store, and, later, the Inco medical clinics. She married Mervyn in June 1961, and soon started her internship at Toronto East General Hospital. She completed residency training as an anesthesiologist in Detroit. During her four decades at work in operating rooms in Windsor, Ont., and London, she forged many close friendships.
Dr. Small loved to cook good food for all in her orbit: every holiday meal at her home was a feast! Several of her other talents included sewing most of her wardrobe as a young woman, crocheting and gardening. She enjoyed travelling all seven continents of the world with family and friends.
She is dearly missed by her two daughters Karen (Michael) Steckner and Cyndi McKenzie; also her sister, Sonia Bertrim. She is the beloved grandmother of five boys: Angus, Andrew, Scott, David and Eric, and proud aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband Mervyn, her parents and brothers Harry and Zenas Wowk.
A private service was held for close family and friends. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery, London. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
