Steve, as we all knew him, passed away on April 25, having lived a long and wonderful life. He would have been 93 on May 17.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth, his sister Zora, sons Bob and Stev (Deanna), and grandchildren Bella, Olivia and Harry. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Andy, and his sister Margo.
Born in Glasgow, he emigrated from Scotland in 1958 to Kingston, Ont., where he practised medicine as an obstetrician and gynecologist for 37 years. He loved his work, bringing new lives into the world as he delivered many babies during those years. He taught and mentored medical students at Queen's University. He was a gentle and caring doctor to his patients and a respected teacher.
He was also a keen athlete. In his youth, he played rugby and tennis on the University of Glasgow teams. He loved golfing, fishing, curling, cross-country skiing, bridge and tennis. He loved food and wine. He loved his Alfa Romeo, his dogs, his vegetable garden, his house and cottage, and his boat. He loved a party, and hosted countless gatherings with Ruth at their Lakeland Point Drive home and their summer cottage on Stave Island.
Most importantly, he loved his wife and sons, his many friends and extended family. People were part of his soul. Camaraderie and friendship were in his blood. If you were his friend, you knew it.
For the past seven months, he resided at Providence Care Hospital, where the incredibly supportive and unconditional nurses and doctors and staff cared for him. A special thank you to the staff on Parkside 1 and 2. He was suffering from progressive dementia. Although we lost him cognitively last September, he still had his sense of humour. He started to see the world with wonder again, like a child would at experiencing things for the first time. He was always ready for a party and every time we saw him he would suggest we have a drink.
So, raise a glass of whisky to him. He had a great life. He's now, finally, at peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Foundation for Kingston and Area – The Andy George Endowment Fund, which supports families with children being treated for cancer at Kingston General Hospital.
