A beloved general surgeon serving the community of Cambridge, Ont., for over forty years, Dr. Geddes passed away peacefully on the morning of March 3, 2024, surrounded by his wife, Valerie (Renwick), and children, Jay, Chris, and Allison.
Dr. Geddes dedicated much of his life to Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH), where he served as chief of surgery and cared for thousands of patients over his career. He moved to Cambridge in 1979 after completing medical school and residency training at the University of Western Ontario. Together with his wife Valerie, they raised a family just down the street from where Valerie grew up. Their partnership was built on love, mutual respect and a commitment to serving their community.
Dr. Geddes was known for his soft mannerisms, quick smile and calm demeanour. He was proud to be the face of many CMH fundraisers and believed in the hospital as the heart of a vibrant, healthy community. He was instrumental in recruiting new talent to the region and in educating student doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
Dr. Geddes loved to be outdoors, especially at the cottage with his family. He was a loving and supportive father to his three children, each of whom followed in his footsteps to pursue careers in medicine.
His kindness, generosity and selflessness left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his wife, Valerie; three sisters, Robin (Lou), Meredith, and Brenda (Vitali); and children, Jay (Shyla), Chris (Chryssa) and Allison (Crispin), as well as his eleven grandchildren, who will deeply miss their 'Grandpa.'
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation in honour of Dr. Geddes’ memory.
