Surrounded by his immediate family, Norman McQueen Munnoch passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2023, at Chartwell Lakeshore Retirement Residence in Burlington, Ont. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret, of 68 years; his four loving children, Scott (Chantal), Valerie Steele (Derek), Nicola Newhouse and Paula Minnes (David). Poppa was adored by his eight grandchildren: Casey (Thomas), Mitchell (Andrea), Jonathan (Kylie), Victoria (Hunter), Jake, Kate (Ryan), Brock and Graham; and his great-granddaughter, Max.
Born in Polmont, Scotland, in 1929, Norman graduated from George Watson's College in Edinburgh (head boy and rugby captain) and received his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh. During his residency at The Royal Infirmary, he met a beautiful and talented nursing student named Margaret Oliver, who would later become his wife. He was both academically and athletically gifted, completing six 'A' levels, and representing Scotland in international rugby in the early 1950s, where he was 'capped' three times.
He and Margaret were married in Inverness, Scotland, in 1955, and immigrated to Canada in 1957. They settled in Woodstock, Ont., where he and Margaret raised their children. Norman established a large family medical practice which he ran until his retirement in 2006. Norman also provided anaesthesiology services at Woodstock General Hospital and served as chief of staff. Norman loved to travel and play golf. He and Margaret travelled the world, enjoying many cruises. They spent many winters in Maui and latterly Florida. Norman was very active throughout his life and enjoyed many rounds of golf at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Norman and Margaret moved into Chartwell Lakeshore Retirement Residence in Burlington, Ont., in June 2021.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Chartwell Lakeshore who have been so kind and supportive throughout their time there, and especially in the last days when Norman was in palliative care. Special thanks to Marcella, 'G', Lisa and Ilona, all the resident nurses, PSWs and Dr. Obeid, who went out of their way to coordinate arrangements and make things comfortable during the final days. We know they will continue to support Margaret.
