It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marielle Skinnarland on March 4, 2023, in Hamilton, Ont. Predeceased by her parents Einar and Trudy; she will be dearly missed by her siblings Ron (Dru), Kirvil (Alan), Teresa (Vance) and Ellen, nieces Emily and Julia, former spouse Gordon Guyatt, and most of all by her daughter, Robyn Daly (Michael).
Born in Salem, Ore., Marielle grew up in the United States and India before her family settled in Toronto during her high school years. After starting in nursing, Marielle graduated from McMaster Medical School working first in emergency medicine, and then as a family doctor. After suffering a major stroke at age 35, she returned to work primarily as a counsellor, and soon after took on the demanding role of director of the Student Medical Services at McMaster University.
Even after leaving formal practice due to lupus, Marielle never let her skills go to waste, helping many friends and family members navigate their medical challenges. She was a fiercely devoted and wonderful mother, and a caring friend and sister. Marielle had a brilliant mind, learning languages and new skills with enviable ease. Her last years were burdened by many health challenges which she bore with tremendous grace. She was a woman of strong faith and we are happy that God has welcomed her home to enjoy the eternal rest she deserves.
