Jung Yuey Mah, 74, of North York, Ont., passed away suddenly but peacefully on March 5, 2024.
Jung was born on May 10, 1949, to Choi King and John Cheong Mah in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China. He immigrated to Canada in 1958. He was the eldest of four boys and is survived by his brothers, Min (Ping), Ed (Mai) and John (Linda). He had a spirited relationship with his brothers, challenging them in ways that sometimes took time to process.
Jung met Lilian Leong, got married, and had three children, Baun, Doug (Jennifer) and Kandice. He has two beloved grandchildren, Chloe and Sienna, whom he doted on incessantly and bought a never-ending stream of toys, jewelry and Disney dresses. He also had many nephews and nieces [Pamela, Richard (Erica), Lisa (Mike), Marissa (Drew) and Timothy], who also had children (Ben, Mirabelle, Aiden and Theo) that made Jung smile on a daily basis.
Jung's sole goal in life was providing for his family and giving them a better life than he had. He taught us all the value of hard work and the importance of family; values he lived by right to the very end.
Jung also dedicated his life to medicine. After graduating from Centre Hastings Secondary School in Madoc, Ont. (where he was president of the student council and the Boys Athletic Association, and Cadet Corps commander!), he went on to study at Queen's University, graduating with his medical doctorate in 1975.
Jung did his family medicine residency in Vancouver, B.C., and practised in Roslin, Ont., for several years before returning to school to complete an orthopedic surgery residency at McMaster University, followed by fellowships at the University of Toronto/SickKids and Harvard Medical School/Boston Children's.
Jung returned to McMaster as a staff physician and worked tirelessly to help others, rising to the level of professor of surgery before retiring three years ago. During his career, Jung was also program director for the orthopedic surgery residency program, examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and team doctor for the Canadian National Gymnastics Team. Jung was a man of many talents, and dedicated his life to taking care of the sick and training the next generation of physicians.
Goodbye, Dr. Mah. We love you, Baba. You will be dearly missed.
