It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Jon Ross Linton Spencer announces his passing on June 27, 2023 in North Bay. Jon was born in Toronto on March 27, 1938, the only child of George and Enid Spencer (both deceased). Jon married Donna (Horne) in 1962. They had three children, Andrew (Barbara), Stephen (Micheline) and Jennifer (Shawn Hocking and son Alexander). Grandpa will be dearly missed by grandchildren Samuel and Myriam.
When Jon finished his training in ophthalmology, he embraced northern life. He moved to North Bay in 1967 and cared for patients in the region for over 50 years. Some years, Jon would even fly into remote northern communities to provide care to residents.
Jon was a keen participant and spectator in sports. Early on in North Bay, Jon helped bring in rules for face protection in minor hockey to reduce eye injuries. He volunteered at the North Bay Nordic Ski Club maintaining trails and participated in various fundraisers. There was much talk about Jon’s perilous bike ride from Peninsula Road on Highway 63 to his office or the hospital.
Knowledgeable, supportive, loving and caring, Jon will be forever remembered by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Bay Regional Health Centre and Foundation’s Ophthalmology Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.martynfh.com.
