James Alexander Smith (Jimmy) died Dec. 16, 2023, peacefully in his sleep after a short illness. Born in Toronto, on Oct. 16, 1926, he was the youngest of four children and the only son of Scottish immigrants, James and Helen (née Bisset) Smith.
He attended Davisville Public School, North Toronto Collegiate and the University of Toronto Medical School, graduating in 1949. In that same year, he met and married his beloved Elizabeth (Betty) Marie Schlee, who sadly predeceased him in 1982. Father of Tom, Paul, Carole, James and Patricia, with 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He practised medicine from 1952 to 1967 in Mount Forest and in Owen Sound from 1967 to 1993, where he restricted his practice to anesthesia. His later years were made happy by his longtime partner, Sandra Orr, who predeceased him in 2005.
A celebration of his life will be held in Toronto in the spring of 2024.
