Harold Binhammer, 93, of Midlothian, Virginia passed away on Nov. 5, 2023, at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center with family at his side.
Son of Marianne and Herbert Binhammer, he was born in 1930 in Hanover, Ont., where he and his three brothers, Gerry, Helmut and Bob grew up in the local Lutheran parish house. Harold attended Waterloo College before studying medicine at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. There he established his family practice and then moved to Richmond, Virginia. Many cherished his kind and compassionate bedside manner. He was instrumental in organizing several medical missions to Haiti. In 2006, he was awarded the Richmond Academy of Medicine's Distinguished Service Award for Global Medical Volunteerism.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife Doris (Calnan). He is survived by his brother Robert Binhammer of Toronto, Ont. He was a loving dad to his children and granddad to their children: Richard Binhammer of Midlothian; Paul (Cathy) Binhammer and their children Lauren, Lisanne, Adam and Ryan of Toronto, Ont.; John (Cris) Binhammer of Midlothian; David (Cathy) Binhammer of Midlothian; and Lisa Harvey and her children, Wren and Dodge, of Cody, WY. He was a special uncle to many, especially Diane Hubbs of Picton, Ont.
Harold built and nurtured a wonderful family – proud of his children and their individual paths forward, he always stood by, supporting them. He was a special friend and neighbor to many, believing in kindness and comradery. For many years, he drove his wife and five children in a station wagon from Canada to Florida. He loved his travels across Canada and the United States, as well as to Europe, in the latter case working on his family tree. He especially loved his annual fishing trip with his brothers and summers at the family cottage on Papineau Lake in Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Haiti Outreach Ministries.
