A trusted friend, physician, and coroner, serving the community of Cambridge, Ontario for half a century, Dr. Nykamp passed away peacefully Monday, April 8, surrounded by his loved ones.
Dr. Nykamp dedicated his life to our community. Moving to Preston in 1971, he headed the hospital's laboratory services until returning to university to pursue his dream of medicine. Graduating McMaster Medical School in 1980, he became the beloved family doctor to thousands of people in Cambridge.
As coroner, he supported hundreds more families during their darkest hours and was always there when Waterloo Region's police needed him. In his role as coroner, he became one of our community's leading voices addressing the fentanyl crisis.
Dr. Nykamp's service to his community did not end at the hospital doors. As president of the Cambridge North Rotary Club, and charter president of the Cambridge Sunrise Rotary Club, he led initiatives to further improve the lives of people in our community and help people around the world.
Dr. Nykamp's passion was exploring the world with his wife and soulmate Beverley. In addition to travel, they cherished each other's company horseback riding, golfing, and camping.
He left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. Preceded by brother John, he is survived by his wife Beverley, sister Willemina (Hugh), brother Albert (Lysje), children Stephanie (Mike) and Mark and two grandchildren who shall deeply miss their Opa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Central Presbyterian Church Restoration Fund in Dr. Nykamp's memory.
