It is with deep sorrows that the family announces the passing of Dr. Edwin “Ed” Owen Wyllis Knight, at the age of 89, on Feb. 14, 2024, in Sudbury, Ont. Loving father of Adrian Knight, and proud grandfather of Richelle Almeida-Knight and Paige Almeida-Knight.
Edwin was born in Antigua, West Indies on July 4, 1934. The family then moved to St. Kitts where his family grew to include his younger siblings: Tim, Stuart, Yvonne, Adele, Jose and Jacqueline.
He studied medicine at Dalhousie University and graduated in 1961. After a short internship at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, he then moved back to St. Kitts to serve his community as a general surgeon. In 1964, he took a fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. During his fellowship, he not only worked throughout the United Kingdom but was also an associate professor in surgery at the University of Nairobi. He became a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon in 1976, then joined the Sudbury medical community in 1978 until 2002 at the Sudbury Memorial Hospital. He was a well-renowned surgeon, who was known for his professionalism, perseverance, empathy and humbleness.
During retirement, he spent his time golfing with friends and family, solving Sudoku puzzles and was an avid music lover. He attended professional boxing matches as a ringside physician for many years and was inducted into the Boxing Canada Hall of Fame in 2002. He loved a good party joined by neighbours, colleagues and friends. His humour and joy of life made all laugh.
