We are sad to announce the passing of Douglas Robert Cain, loving father, husband and friend. Douglas passed away on the morning of Aug. 26, 2023, at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Home in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Douglas was born in Winnipeg on Dec. 6, 1929, and grew up in the town of Winnipeg Beach, Man. As a young man, he first trained to be a carpenter and then he decided to follow his dream and enrolled in the University of Manitoba School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1959.
He married Eva Viola (Vi) Enns on Oct. 17, 1959, and together they moved to Saskatoon and then Baltimore, where Douglas completed his internship and residency in urology. They moved to Thunder Bay in 1966, where Douglas practiced urology at the Spence Clinic and McKeller Hospital. In 1979, they emigrated to the United States and lived in Hobbs, N.M., for 3 years and then in Enterprise, Ala., until Douglas retired in 1999. In April 2001, Vi Cain passed away suddenly.
Douglas and Vi had four sons together: Richard Douglas Cain, born April 11, 1960; Robert John Cain (Sheila), born June 15, 1961; Philip Arthur Cain, born Feb. 24, 1968; and Peter Anthony Cain (deceased), born Dec. 18, 1969.
Douglas married Barbara Grace from Thunder Bay on April 6, 2002. They resided in Enterprise until they moved to Winnipeg in 2010. Then in 2013, they returned to Thunder Bay where they lived the rest of their lives together until Barbara passed in July 2022.
Douglas had many hobbies and interests including photography, woodwork, camping, travelling, canoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing and hunting. He also found time to share his interests with his sons while we were growing. We will always remember his sense of humour, his intelligence and his enthusiasm for trying new things and seeing new places. We will miss him.
