After a courageous battle with cancer, we are sad to announce the passing of Dr. Stanley Goldstein on Jan. 22, 2023, at the age of 86. Stanley passed away surrounded by his family at the place he loved so much, his home on Christie Lake, overlooking his special fishing spot.
Predeceased by his parents, Dr. Ernest and Anne Goldstein. Survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Norma (MacLeod), and cherished father and father-in-law to Randi and Ian Sherman, Allan and Stephanie Goldstein and Cathy Kerzner. Much loved Zaida to Jonathan, Matthew and Michelle, Adam and Felicia (Stone) Sherman, Brianna and Andrea Goldstein and Chloe and Alex Kerzner. Brother-in-law to Barbara and Doug Arnold. Special uncle to Lorne and Celia, Zack, Hannah and Sam Goldstein and his many nieces and nephews in Sydney, N.S. Brother to Dr. Martin Goldstein. Special lifelong friend of Gary and Joan Cardiff and Gail and the late Ron White. The family appreciates the wonderful dedication and support of Dr. Stephanie Popiel of Perth and the McPhee family of Christie Lake.
Born and raised in Montreal, Stanley moved to Ottawa in 1971, to become the city's first geriatric psychiatrist. He was a pioneer in geriatric health care in Ottawa and was instrumental in establishing policies surrounding long-term health care in the region. In 1973, Stanley joined the planning committee that established the Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) and sat on the QCH's inaugural board of directors. He was the first chief of psychiatry at QCH, a position he held for 13 years. Upon his retirement from the QCH in 1996, he became the sole private practice psychiatrist in the Perth/Smiths Falls district, where he continued to work until his cancer diagnosis in June 2020.
