Lovingly attended, Dr. Miguel Gallego Gonzalez passed away peacefully on Sept. 6, 2023, in Brantford, Ont., at age 94.
Miguel leaves his beloved wife of 62 years Consuelo (nee Muga Nosti), his children Miguel Jose (Nancy Moore), Dr. Juan Cristobal, Maria Blanca (Guillermo Zaballa) and grandson Juan Carlos. Born to Timoteo and Benilde in Moscas del Paramo, Leon, Spain, youngest brother of Laurentino, Angeles and Maria del Pilar, all predeceased.
Miguel graduated from Universidad de Valladolid Medical School in 1953, and after a five-year internship at the Sanatorio Antituberculoso de la Santa Cruz in Liencres (Santander, Spain), he was licensed as a doctor by the Universidad de Madrid, specializing in thoracic surgery and respiratory organs.
Dr. Gallego emigrated to Canada in 1960 and re-did his medical internship at the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, becoming a family physician in 1962. After a year on staff at the Fort William (Thunder Bay) Tuberculosis Sanatorium, during which he taught Spanish at Lakehead University, Miguel moved his family to Brantford in 1964. As part of the Brantford Clinic and in private practice, Dr. Gallego served his patients and the community with pride and dedication for 42 years until retiring in 2006.
At age 75, Miguel walked 350 kilometers of Spain’s historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Miguel was an avid fisherman, a history and geography buff and a proud supporter of the Kitchener Spanish Club. A healer and a teacher, he loved his family and cherished his friends.
The Gallego family extends a profound thank you to the Brantford General Hospital and the John Noble Home for their heartfelt compassion in caring for Miguel.
