Dr. John Peter MacNeil from Toronto, Ont., passed away suddenly on June 30, 2023 at the age of 59.
Born in Halifax, N.S., to Jack and Marie MacNeil, he was raised in Dartmouth and attended Prince Andrew High School. He graduated from Dalhousie Medical School (1990). After a short time practising family medicine in Lunenburg, N.S., he went on to complete his residency in anesthesia at Dalhousie. He practised this specialty at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, the Dartmouth General Hospital, and at the time of his death, he was practising at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga.
In his younger years, Peter was an accomplished bagpiper; where he travelled and competed extensively. His hard work led him to become an open-class piper and then a competition judge. He was an avid sports fan, often taking his children to games and supporting his teams: the Blue Jays, the Raptors, the Habs, and Wrexham AFC. Peter loved to travel, especially to tropical destinations where he could be on the beach, under the sun, with a cerveza in hand. He always made time for a round of golf in the summer and enjoyed trying out different courses during his various trips. One of his most recent favourite television series was Ted Lesso, and he often quoted “Be a goldfish and believe” as a new life mantra. The greatest joys of his life were his four children, Iain (32), Mikaylah (28), Maeve (14), and Eoghan (11).
Peter is survived by his children, his parents, Jack and Marie MacNeil of Dartmouth, N.S., his sisters Kathy (Patrick) and JoAnne (Andy), and many nieces.
