Predeceased by his beloved wife Angela (2019) and by his daughter Zoe (2010). Survived by his son John (Barb) and his son-in-law Craig (Cindy). Proud grandfather of Angus, Sarah, Fiona, and Heather. Survived by his sister Margaret (Martin).
Born in South Shields, England, Iain was primarily raised in Scotland, graduating from the University of Glasgow with a medical degree in 1957. After two years of adventures in the British Royal Navy, he married Angela in 1960. Within a few years, the family moved from England to Scotland where Iain practiced medicine with his father. In 1967, the Baxters moved to Canada with the intent of a two-year overseas experience. However, the friendships they developed in Parry Sound and his love of their new country ensured they never left. Blanchette Island, their Georgian Bay retreat, was a place where he could indulge in his love of boating and the water.
Over the years as his family grew to include grandchildren, it became a special gathering place. In 2006, he and Angela moved to Sarnia to be closer to family. Through both his church and other activities, he quickly found a community here and was able to continue his appreciation of water with a fantastic view of both the river and the lake. Many thanks to Dr. MacSweeney, Dr. Crombeen, Dr. Lilly, and the palliative care staff for their exemplary care. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Hospice, St. Giles Presbyterian Church, or the charity of your choice. Memories and condolences may be sent online at Smith funeral home.
