It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Douglas Ellworth Bean, at Freeport Health Centre on Monday, May 29, 2023 at the age of 87 years.

Doug is survived by his loving wife Margo-Lyn Bean and the families of Son, Michael Douglas Bean (Tiffany), Daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Lee (Tom), and Son, Paul Andrew Bean (May). His grandchildren Eric and Maddie Lee and Cassandra and Logan Bean have been a great delight and tremendous source of joy over the years.

Douglas graduated from Queen's University in medicine (MDCM) in 1960; completed a successful internship at Toronto Western Hospital, Certified Certificant Family Practice (CCFP); including extra time in cardiology at St. Michael's Hospital, in pediatrics at SickKids Hospital; additional time in obstetrics and gynecology at Women's College Hospital. After serving a year as a staff physician at Toronto Western Hospital, he joined Dr. Hilliard Varty's private family practice in West Toronto.

Following a successful career as a physician in Toronto, he moved to Kitchener to join the private practice, as a partner, with Dr. Ross Grant and Dr. Vern Pigdeon. His private practice included regular work with Uniroyal, CPR, Smith Transport and Unemployment Government divisions.

He was a caring and dedicated member of the medical community in southwestern Ontario for several years until he decided to join the medical team at Mutual Life Insurance Company, later Clarica. There, he was a prominent member of the medical management team for over 30 years before retiring in 1999.

He was a prominent leader in local community service as a director of Saint Monica House, a director and then president of CAA Mid-Western Division and leadership roles in the Probus and Rotary Clubs of Waterloo, where he was appointed a Fellow of Rotary. He was a serving brother, then a serving officer with St. John's Ambulance, and was actively involved in CCAC, the Historical Society and the Art & Culture Committee of Waterloo.

In his retirement, he enjoyed travelling, gardening and participating as a member of the Retired Business and Professional Group, ROMEO's and other local committees.

He and his family enjoyed the family cottage and surrounding beauty of the Haliburton Highlands in Ontario.

He passed peacefully at Grand River Hospital Freeport Campus after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. The family thanks all of those who supported him through his final days.

In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family and donations to St. Mary's Hospital Cardiac Care Centre and Grand River Regional Cancer Centre may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home.
