Dr. David Schaffelburg was born in Halifax, N.S. in August of 1947. That September his family moved to Montreal for his father to start teaching at Westmount Senior High School. David went to school in Westmount where he was student council president in 1963-64. He then went to Bishops University graduating in 1968 and entered McGill Medical School to graduate in 1972, He did his residency in Montreal in obstetrics and gynecology and joined the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital where he was chief of the department in 1983 to 1987 and was an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McGill.
While department chief, he trained in psychoanalysis and was elected in 1989 as a member of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS). In the fall of 1990, he moved to London, Ont. where he started a full-time psychoanalytic practice and his wife, Angela Sheppard, also a psychoanalyst, joined him in the summer of 1991.
He practised there until his retirement in 2010. He was national secretary of the CPS from 2000 to 2004 and national president in 2006 and 2007. He continued on National Council until the spring of 2019.
He is survived by his wife, Angela and his brother Paul (and Yvonne) and sister, Laura Taylor (Tony) their son Keith and his wife’s nephew Scott (Brenda) and her niece Debbie (Ted).
