Dr. Fernando Teixeira is an emergency medicine physician and a global leader in the clinical aspects of the diagnosis and management of coronavirus infection, with expertise in the SARS-1 and -2 outbreaks of Toronto and the COVID-19 pandemic. He also focuses on the concepts of equity, inclusivity and service to disadvantaged and disenfranchised members of society.
Dr. Teixeira is a graduate of the University of Toronto School of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine in 2002. He holds licensure in Canada, United States, Europe and Bermuda. For 17 years, he worked at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and continues to hold an appointment at the University of Toronto, Department of Medicine, Division of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Teixeira’s expertise in clinical medicine and his passion for educating the next generation of physicians has led to numerous educational awards throughout a teaching career of over 25 years. He is also the longest serving editor of the Emergency Medicine chapter of Toronto Notes, the most comprehensive and up-to-date medical review text in Canada.
In 2019, Dr. Teixeira began a new phase of his career at the University of California San Francisco, Fresno and Community Regional Medical Center. He holds a clinical appointment at the level of assistant professor and serves on several committees at the local, regional and national level.
A child of the sixties, raised in poverty and eternally inquisitive, Dr. Teixeira now lives in Fresno, California with Caroline, his wife of 25 years, and their two children. He enjoys hiking, cooking and learning.
