OMA and OMF Lead the Initiative

In response to concerns raised by the OMA student members, the OMA's governing Council endorsed the creation of the Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund.

The Ontario Medical Foundation (a registered charity, established by the OMA in 1967 to support medical and health related research and education) has taken up the challenge of establishing and coordinating the Fund. The OMF has provided financial support to medical students for many years.

The OMA is continuing to work with government to find ways of dealing with high tuition fees, unrealistic loan programs, matching funds, return of service, and other issues of importance to physicians and medical students.

Ontario physicians will be contacted either by the OMF or by their participating Faculty of Medicine. Foundations and leaders of Corporations will be asked to support the OMSBF. The Canadian Medical Association/MD Management has already joined the initiative as principal sponsor by contributing with a major gift.
